There are now over 50 pages on www.youtube.com of the song 'Upside Down' WRITTEN by Two Minds Crack covered by the Philippino boyband 6Cyclemind alone....that amounts to over 3 MILLION plays.Whilst being gratuitous for that and proud beyond belief that we could write such a massive song...it would be nice if PPL or PRS would get us the money that we deserve...!...and that's not including the radio plays..or TV shows..!
Formed in Port Talbot 1980 by Kev Jones,Mark Davies and Pete Martin. Got a demo tape reviewed by Steve Sutherland of Melody Maker and got a centre page spread in October of 1981, eventually having the 1st recorded version of 'The Sense that never Sleeps 'put on the Melody Maker Red Stripe compilation album. We moved to London in 1983 and acquired the drumming talents of B.P.Hurding of 'X-ray - Spex ' and 'Classix Nouveaux'. We started recording at the Workhouse Studios in the Old Kent Rd with producer Laurie Latham ( Paul Young,Stereophonics ).The track The Hunger and the Greed was released by Sedition Records in 1984 and was a hit in Spain and Italy (12" versions contained 'I think I've fallen in Love' and 'The dream that came before').The second release on Sedition was 'Enemies of Promise' produced by the late great Gus Dudgeon ( Elton John,David Bowie ). Again a track that did well in Europe.
After a few dodgy managerial decisions in which we saw B.P move on to other things, in early '85 we started working with Producer Dave Hewson and ace sound engineer and producer Simon Humphrey ( Clash,Smokie ) and subsequently signed to Sire Records which released the album 'The Victory Parade' in 1986. The singles 'Cry,Cry,Cry', 'One sky above us' and in some countries 'Upside Down', were taken off the album. 'Upside Down' became a huge hit in the Philippines and has subsequently been covered by Pino bands 'Candles' and '6Cyclemind'.
Unfortunately the big hit was to to elude us and in 1988 we were released from the clutches of Sire. More recording followed but alas no new deal. In 1989 we decided to call it a day as TMC.
In compiling the whole of the back catalogue of songs we recorded,I was surprised at how much recording we did over the years. All of the songs available show a band just learning their craft, developing it ,recording some crap but also making some good records for the time. For a brief moment between '83 and 87 we mixed and talked with Frankie,Ultravox,Spandau, most of whom were pissheads like us but great to chat with.I woke up in all sorts of places in London including Kensington Gardens.Got thrown out of Stringfellows and strolled naked through the foyer of a 5* hotel in Madrid !! I was just getting into being a rock 'n roller when it was ripped from my grasp. So close yet so far...but what a laugh.
